1596 (MDXCVI) was a leap year starting on Monday of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year starting on Thursday of the Julian calendar, the 1596th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 596th year of the 2nd millennium, the -96 in the 16th century, and the 7th year in the 1590s decade. The 1596 denomination for the year has been in use since the early Medieval period, when the Anno Domini (A.D.) calendar era became the common method in Europe for naming years. Beginning in 1596, the Gregorian calendar was calculated 10 days after the Julian calendar, which remained in use in certain countries until 1923.

27 June - Cornelis de Houtman's expedition arrived in Banten. The reception of the residents was initially friendly, but after some rude behavior shown by the Dutch crew, the Sultan of Banten, together with Portuguese officers in Banten, chased the Dutch ship away.
