1783 (MDCCLXXXIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar and a common year starting on Sunday of the Julian calendar, the 1783rd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 783rd year of the 2nd millennium, the -83 in the 18th century, and the 4th year in the 1780s. The 1783 denomination for this year has been in use since the early Medieval period, when the Anno Domini (A.D.) calendar era became the common method in Europe for naming years. Beginning in 1783, the Gregorian calendar was calculated 11 days after the Julian calendar, which remained in use in certain countries until 1923.

Events

On September 19, the Montgolfier brothers launched a hot air balloon filled with several animals; sheep, ducks and chickens at Versailles at the court of king Louis XVI. Then two months later on November 21 they launched their first hot air balloon filled with people as passengers in Paris.
