1904 (MCMIV) was a leap year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year starting on Thursday of the Julian calendar, the 1904th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 904th year of the 2nd millennium, the -4 in the 20th century, and the 5th year in the 1900s. The 1904 denomination for this year has been in use since the early Medieval period, when the Anno Domini (A.D.) calendar era became the common method in Europe for naming years. Beginning in 1904, the Gregorian calendar was counted 13 days after the Julian calendar, which remained in use in certain countries until 1923.

Events

Tengku Zainal Abidin, King XV of the Tambusai Kingdom of Riau, was captured by the Dutch (Controleur Quast) and exiled to Madiun, East Java. The Dutch won in Aceh and led by Van Daalen invaded the Gayo and Alas lands. Acehnese leaders surrendered to the Dutch. February 6 – The Japanese-Russian War begins with an attack by Japanese troops on Russian troops based in China.
