1492 – Christopher Columbus, Italian sailor, begins his historic voyage to embark on a mission to find a new way to India 1783 – Mount Asama in Japan erupts killing 35,000 people. 1837 - Conquest of Bonjol: Lieutenant Colonel Andreas Victor Michiels replaces Eerens in the attack on Bonjol to end the Padri War. 1884 - The galaxy NGC 27 is discovered by Lewis A. Swift. 1914 – World War I: Germany declares war on France. 1916 – World War I: Fighting between British and Ottoman Empire forces takes place around the Suez Canal.
