David Maria Sassoli (Italian pronunciation: [sasˈsɔːli]; 30 May 1956 – 11 January 2022) was an Italian politician and journalist who served as President of the European Parliament from 3 July 2019 until his death in January 2022. Sassoli was first elected a member European Parliament (MEP) in 2009.

In the 2019 European Parliament elections in Italy, Sassoli was re-elected as a member of the European Parliament, with 128,533 votes. On 2 July 2019, he was proposed by the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) as the new president of the European Parliament. The following day, Sassoli was elected president by the assembly with 345 votes in favor, replacing Antonio Tajani. He is the seventh Italian to hold the post.
Sassoli is married to Alessandra Vittorini, they have two children, Giulio and Livia. He is a fan of ACF Fiorentina, a football team in his hometown. Sassoli is a member of Articolo 21, liberi di..., an Italian advocacy group, founded on 27 February 2001, whose members include journalists, writers, directors and lawyers , this group aims to promote the constitutional principle of freedom of expression.
In September 2021 Sassoli was hospitalized in Strasbourg suffering from severe pneumonia. The illness left him unable to carry out his duties for more than two months, including an absence from the European Parliament's Annual Session. In December 2021 Sassoli was again hospitalized, this time being treated in Italy for "serious complications due to immune system dysfunction". Sassoli died on January 11, 2022, in Aviano, Italy at the age of 65.
