The calendar era is the year numbering system used by a calendar. For example, the Gregorian calendar adds up the years in the Western Christian era (the Catholic and Ethiopian churches have their own Christian eras). The diamond, date, or year of time is marked by what is called the era of that era. There are several different calendar eras. In ancient times, the regnal years were marked by the appointment of a ruler. This makes ancient Far Eastern Chronology very difficult to reconstruct. In East Asia, the recording of era names chosen by ruling rulers ceased in the 20th century except in Japan, where they still use them.
