Evacuation Day (New York)

Article

December 7, 2021

After the American Revolution, Evacuation Day on November 25 marked the day in 1783 when the remnants of British rule in the United States — the army in New York — left Manhattan. The final American Revolutionary War shot was reportedly fired on this day, when a British gunner on one of the ships fired a cannon into the crowd on the shores of Staten Island, at the mouth of New York Harbor (this shot fell near the shore).
