Japan (日本国, Nipponkoku) is an island nation in East Asia. It is located at the western end of the Pacific Ocean, east of the Sea of ​​Japan, and is neighboring China, South Korea, and Russia. The northernmost islands are in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, and the southernmost region is a group of small islands in the East China Sea, to the south of Okinawa, which is neighboring Taiwan. Etymology

Japan is called Nippon or Nihon in Japanese. These two words are written with the same kanji, namely (literally: origin of the sun). The term Nippon is often used in official business, including the name of the country on Japanese money, postage stamps, and international sporting events. Meanwhile, the term Nihon is used in informal matters such as daily conversation. The words Nippon and Nihon mean "country/land of the rising sun". This name is mentioned in Imperial Japan's correspondence with the Sui Dynasty in China, and refers to Japan's position in the east of mainland China.
