The President of Ukraine (Ukrainian: езидент аїни, Prezydent Ukrainy) is the head of state of Ukraine. The president represents Ukraine in international relations with other countries, manages foreign policy activities, conducts negotiations, and signs international agreements. The president is directly elected by the citizens of Ukraine for a term of five years (depending on whether the presidential election is advanced earlier or at the scheduled time) and is limited to two consecutive terms. The official residence of the president is the Mariyinsky Palace, located in the Pechersk district of the capital. Kyiv. The Office of the President of Ukraine, unofficially known as "Bankova" in reference to the street the building is located on, serves as the presidential office building and a place to give direction to the president on domestic, foreign and legal matters in Ukraine. Since the presidency was formed on December 5, 1991, there have been six people who have served as Presidents of Ukraine. Leonid Kravchuk was the first president to serve for three years from 1991 until his resignation in 1994. Leonid Kuchma is the only president to have served two consecutive terms. Viktor Yushchenko, Petro Poroshenko, and Viktor Yanukovych served one term, with the latter being replaced by the acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, who also served as Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, on 21 February 2014. Oleksandr Turchynov is the only acting president in history modern Ukraine. Unlike in the United States, when he becomes the acting president, the acting president receives all the powers and duties of the presidency, in Ukraine the powers of the acting president are very limited. On June 18, 2015, Yanukovych was officially removed from the post of President of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government uses a semi-presidential system, in which the roles of head of state and head of government are separated, so the President of Ukraine is not the head of state government. The Prime Minister of Ukraine acts as head of government, currently held by Denys Shmyhal since March 4, 2020. The current President of Ukraine is Volodymyr Zelenskyy who was sworn in on May 20, 2019.
