Synopsis

By raising the universal humanitarian aspect rather than emphasizing the religious aspect, this film tells the story of the first indigenous bishop in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), Monsignor Albertus Soegijapranata SJ, from his ordination until the end of Indonesia's war of independence (1940 – 1949). This turbulent decade was marked by the end of Dutch colonialism, the entry and start of the Japanese occupation, the proclamation of Indonesian independence, and the return of the Dutch who wanted to take back Indonesia, thus starting the Indonesian war of independence. Soegija recorded these events in his diaries, as well as his participation in alleviating the burden of the people's suffering in the midst of the chaos of war. He tries to play a role at all levels, both local, national and international politics. For his participation, President Soekarno awarded him with the title of National Hero.
