Soegija is an Indonesian historical epic drama film directed by senior Indonesian director Garin Nugroho, who also served as screenwriter based on the memoir Soegija, Diary of a Humanitarian Warrior by Gregorius Budi Subanar. This film stars culturalist Nirwan Dewanto who plays the national hero Albertus Soegijapranata, supported by actors from various cultural backgrounds. Soegija was launched in Indonesia on June 7, 2012. With a budget of around Rp. 12 billion, this film became the most expensive film directed by Garin Nugroho. This film was produced in a struggle film format that took the story from the diaries of the National Hero Mgr. Soegijapranata, SJ, with the background of the Indonesian War of Independence and the founding of the United States of Indonesia in the period 1940 – 1949. This film was directed by veteran director Garin Nugroho with the background of Yogyakarta and Semarang. This film also features other Indonesian national figures, such as Soekarno, Fatmawati, Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Sjahrir, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX, Sri Paku Alam VIII, General Sudirman, Suharto, etc. To be able to describe Soegija's experience, this film features many real but fictional characters from Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, civil and military in everyday events which are reconstructed in sufficient detail.

By raising the universal humanitarian aspect rather than emphasizing the religious aspect, this film tells the story of the first indigenous bishop in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), Monsignor Albertus Soegijapranata SJ, from his ordination until the end of Indonesia's war of independence (1940 – 1949). This turbulent decade was marked by the end of Dutch colonialism, the entry and start of the Japanese occupation, the proclamation of Indonesian independence, and the return of the Dutch who wanted to take back Indonesia, thus starting the Indonesian war of independence. Soegija recorded these events in his diaries, as well as his participation in alleviating the burden of the people's suffering in the midst of the chaos of war. He tries to play a role at all levels, both local, national and international politics. For his participation, President Soekarno awarded him with the title of National Hero.
