Soegijapranata Catholic University
Soegijapranata Catholic University (Unika) is a leading Catholic university in Indonesia with an "A" accredited institution status, located in the city of Semarang, Central Java, and under the auspices of the Sandjojo Foundation which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Semarang.
Soegijapranata Unika is the first private university in Central Java to be awarded an "A" accreditation.
This university is a continuation of the Indonesian Catholic University Atmajaya Semarang Branch which was born in 1964 and which later changed to the Semarang Catholic Institute of Technology (I.T.K.S.) in 1973.
On August 5, 1982 with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia dated September 24, 1983 Number 0400/0/1983, I.T.K.S. changed its name to Soegijapranata Catholic University.
Soegijapanata Catholic University is one of the best private universities in Indonesia, which has the motto "Talenta pro patria et humanitate" or talent for the homeland and humanity. This motto is taken from Mgr Albertus Soegijapranata's message, which is "Talent given by God".
At the beginning of its establishment, Soegijapranata Catholic University which is located on Jl. Pandanaran 100 Semarang consists of three faculties, namely the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Economics. Along with the development of the University, since the mid-1990s all activities of UNIKA Soegijapranata have been centered on the Bendan Dhuwur Campus and until now the Bendhan Dhuwur Campus has become the center of academic activities for this university.
The name "Soegijapranata" was taken from the name of Mgr. Alb. Soegijapranata, SJ, a priest and the first indigenous archbishop to become a national figure and hero. Soegijapranata was born in Surakarta, November 25, 1896. Entered as a novice for the Society of Jesus in Mariendaal, Grave, the Netherlands on September 27, 1920. He was ordained a priest on August 15, 1931 and on September 20, 1940 as Archbishop of Semarang.
His struggle and concern in education is a continuation of the attitude of his teacher, Father Frans Van Lith, SJ. One of them is his struggle to raise the two oldest Catholic colleges. Parahyangan University in Bandung and IKIP Sanata Dharma Yogyakarta (now Sanata Dharma University) to obtain status equated with state universities. Through the name "Soegijapranata", Unika Soegijapranata wishes to continue the fighting spirit of Mgr. Alb. Soegijapranata, SJ as the protector of the university. As for the film that tells the life story of Mgr. Albertus Soegijapranata who is a patron of the Catholic University of Seogijapranata himself was appointed to the big screen in 2012. The film titled "Soegija" was directed by Garin Nugroho and received a very good response from all film lovers in this country where more than 500,000 viewers have seen this film live in cinemas throughout Indonesia.
