March - British annexation of Wales (Statute of Rhuddlan). 6 August - At the battle of Meloria, a decisive Genoese victory against the Pisan fleet. Consequent loss of power for some important Pisan families. In Pisa the Guelph Count Ugolino della Gherardesca was appointed podestà and captain of the people who immediately entered into a peace agreement with Florence and Lucca. Peterhouse, Cambridge University's first college, is founded. The first gold duchy is minted, the coin of the republic of Venice. In Iglesias, construction of the Cathedral of Santa Chiara begins at the behest of Ugolino della Gherardesca. Alfonso X's monarchy ends in Castile.
