Swedish pharmacist Karl Wilhelm Scheele discovers oxygen. The first edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica is completed. Effusive eruption of Vesuvius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Ascanio in Alba with libretto by Giuseppe Parini is staged for the first time on October 17th at the Regio Teatro Ducale in Milan. The first Normalschule (also called Musterschule) is opened in Vienna on January 2nd. The Vatican Museums are opened to the public.
