United States: Ronald Reagan accuses Libya of supporting Palestinian terrorism. The US fleet stationed in the Mediterranean mobilizes off the Libyan coast. Italy: the Italian government declares an embargo on arms supplies against Libya.

January

January 1st European Union: Spain and Portugal become member states of the EEC (from ten to twelve). The island of Aruba begins the process of independence from the Netherlands and is separated from the Netherlands Antilles. January 9: Stephen P. Synnott and the Voyager 2 space probe discover Cressida (satellite of Uranus). January 19: The first computer virus, (c) Brain, spreads around the world. January 20: Richard Terrile discovers two satellites of Uranus: Cordelia and Ofelia. January 23: Bradford A. Smith and the Voyager 2 space probe discover Bianca (satellite of Uranus). January 26: Yoweri Museveni overthrows Tito Okello and takes power in Uganda. January 28: the Space Shuttle Challenger explodes in the take-off phase; all seven astronauts die in the accident. February 10 - Palermo: the maxi trial against the mafia opens in the bunker classroom of the Ucciardone prison. February 16 - Portugal: Socialist Mário Soares is the new president of the republic. February 20 Milan: the entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi buys the Milan Football Association. He will be appointed president on the following 21 March. The first module of the Russian orbiting space station Mir is launched; it will be decommissioned only in 2001.
