History and culture

Formerly called sextilis (the sixth month of the Roman calendar year, which began with Martius), the month was renamed augustus in the year 8 BC, in honor of the emperor Augustus, from whom the Ferragosto (feriae Augusti) is also named. , on the decision of the Senate of Rome. It is often said that August has thirty-one days because Augustus wanted his month to correspond to the July length of Gaius Julius Caesar, but this is an invention of the 13th-century scholar Giovanni Sacrobosco. Sextilis in fact had thirty-one days before being renamed, and was not chosen for its length.Among the Guanches of the Canary Islands, the month of August received in the name of Beñesmer or Beñesmen, which was also the harvest festival held this month .
