The University of Chicago (English: University of Chicago, UChicago, U of C, or Chicago) is a private university located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of the City of Chicago, United States of America. Founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller, it is today recognized as one of the world's leading centers of study and research, consistently positioned among the 10 most prestigious universities in the world in major higher education publications. The University of Chicago is famous for academic rigor, vibrant intellectual atmosphere and his commitment to free and interdisciplinary research.

Description

The University of Chicago was one of the first US universities to be conceived as a combination of the American model of interdisciplinary liberal arts college and the German model of university as a research location. Chicago is made up of an undergraduate college and five graduate research divisions. The university is connected with the emergence and success of influential academic movements, such as the Chicago School of Economics, the Chicago School of Sociology, the Chicago School of Literary Criticism. Associated with the university is also the economic analysis of law movement. Under the stands of the university's "Stagg Field" stadium, Enrico Fermi carried out, on December 2, 1942, the first self-powered nuclear chain reaction using the reactor, called Chicago Pile-1. The university has the largest university publishing house in the United States, the University of Chicago Press. The University is home to the Booth School of Business, a business school, formerly known as The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. The University of Chicago is among the most selective in the world, with an acceptance rate of only 5.9%.
