Wikiquote is one of the wiki-based projects promoted by the Wikimedia Foundation and uses the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia. Born from an idea by Daniel Alston and developed by Brion Vibber, the project's goal is to collaboratively produce a large collection of quotes from famous people, literary, cinematographic, theatrical or musical works, memorials, proverbs, epitaphs etc. ., and to provide insights into them. It is the second best known wiki (after Wikipedia). In 2007 the citations of Wikiquote in Italian were involved in a scientific experiment of the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain; the aim was to verify whether comic phrases can be automatically identified. The Italian version is in first place among those with more voices.
