Nagoya City (Nagoyashi) is a city located in the northwestern part of Aichi Prefecture (Owari region). It is the prefectural capital of Aichi prefecture and is an ordinance-designated city. Excluding the special wards of Tokyo, the city has the third largest population in Japan after Yokohama and Osaka. In ancient times, it was Toriimae-cho, where Atsuta Jingu, which enshrines Kusanagi no Tsurugi, one of the three sacred treasures, was located. In addition, there is Kakuozan Nittaiji, the only temple in Japan that was built to enshrine the Shinshari (the remains and bones of Buddha) donated by the Kingdom of Thailand.
