Dubai (Arabic: دبي; English: Dubai) is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf. It is the capital of the emirate of Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. With a population of 2,106,177, it is the largest in the UAE and the second largest after Abu Dhabi with an area of 4,114 km2. Dubai, along with Abu Dhabi, is the only two emirates that have the veto power to veto wrong laws decided by the country's federal council. The city is located on the northern coast of the United Arab Emirates and is the leading city in the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area. Dubai is nowadays often mistaken for a city-state or an independent state, sometimes referred to as "Dubai" as the representative of the UAE as a whole. In 1833, Sheikh Maktoum bin Berti al Maktoum officially founded Dubai with 800 members of the Baniyas tribe, and began living in the Second Saudi State, now part of Saudi Arabia. The Al Fasa clan of the Baniyas also followed Maktoum from Dubai Creek. In 1892, Britain signed a monopoly treaty under the pretext of protecting Dubai, and it remained under British control until it joined the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Due to its geographical location, Dubai has grown into an important trading hub since the beginning of the 20th century and has already become an important port in the Middle East. Today, Dubai is steadily growing as the cultural center of the Middle East and Persian Gulf region and is emerging as a global metropolis. It is also a center of freight and passenger transport. Dubai's economy began to develop from the oil industry, but as a result of continuing business, tourism, aviation, real estate and financial services are now leading the economy. In recent years, it has attracted global attention, hosting innovative large-scale construction projects and international sporting events. Representative symbols of the city include man-made islands such as The World, Palm Island, Waterfront, skyscrapers, the world's largest shopping mall, and the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa. However, on the other hand, as interest increases, the human rights and labor issues of South Asian workers during construction are becoming a problem. Dubai was also hit hard from 2008 to 2009 as the global economic market slumped due to the 2008 global financial crisis. However, according to a 2013 Oxford Business Group study, the economy is gradually recovering with the help of neighboring emirates. In 2019, Dubai ranked 22nd most expensive city in the world, making it the highest ranking city in the Middle East. Dubai is frequently selected as the most livable city in the Middle East, and Mercer, a global consulting firm in the US, selected it as the most livable city in the Middle East in 2011. In 2012, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked 40th in the Global Urban Competitiveness Index with a score of 55.9. In the 2013 Future City Competitiveness Index, the index predicted that Dubai would rise to 23rd place by 2025. it's a good city

In the 1820s Dubai was called Al Wasl by British historians. There are no records of folklore and mythology, but only a few records in the cultural history of the United Arab Emirates and the oral language transmitted by the people. According to United Arab Emirates cultural and historical researcher Fedel Handhal, the word Dubai comes from the word D, which means the slow flowing Dubai Creek inland.
