Russian Federation (Russian: Росси́йская Федедера́ция [rɐˈsʲiɪ̯skəɪ̯ə fʲɪdʲɪˈrat͡sɨɪ̯ˈə]', cultural language: ɪР.си]', abbreviated Russia (Russian: riˈси)', is a country in Eastern Europe. There are territories spanning 11 time zones, covering all of North Asia and most of Eastern Europe. It borders the Pacific Ocean and Alaska to the east, Norway, Finland, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Belarus to the west, Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, People's Republic of China, Mongolia and North Korea to the south, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. It maintains maritime borders with the United States and Japan in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Strait, and Alaska. The capital is Moscow, and other major cities include St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Sochi. Russia is a very large country with an area of 17,098,246 km2. However, since three-fourths of the country is barren, with few resources and mostly frozen frozen land, four-fifths of the total population are concentrated in the western regions adjacent to Europe. It is the ninth most populous country in the world and one of the least densely populated countries in the world. Russia is made up of 85 federal districts, and more than 20 million people live in Moscow, the capital of Russia. The East Slavs, who make up the majority of the current Russian population, emerged around the 9th century as a loose ethnic union of medieval Slavs called Kyiv Rus. These are confederations that originated in Ukraine, and they are Eastern Europeans, or Europeans. In general, the history of the Slavs is a history dominated by the domination of foreign peoples because they could not overcome frequent foreign powers such as Germanic peoples. They were also serfdom under the control of peoples who migrated from Central Asia. In 988, Eastern Orthodox Christianity was introduced from the Byzantine Empire, and at this time, Byzantine culture and Slavic culture merged, laying the foundation for modern Russian culture. Kyiv Russ later divided into numerous city-states, and the state and union itself disappeared and became serfdom by the Mongols. Afterwards, coalitions that paid taxes to Mongolia, such as the Principality of Moscow, began to appear, and it was only in the 15th century that they were unified under the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In the 18th century, it developed into a Russian Empire by learning and reforming the advanced sciences of Western Europe. Since then, the Russian Empire has emerged as one of the major European powers. However, the backward social system could not be reformed, and due to internal and chronic ills, the Russian Revolution occurred in the lower proletariat, and then the empire collapsed and the Soviet Union, a socialist state, was established. The Soviet Union participated in World War II and had a great influence on the victory of the Allied Powers, and after that, it emerged as a great power together with the United States, and continued to confront with the capitalist camp of the United States during the Cold War. Afterwards, the Soviet Union poured huge funds into science and technology and performed historic feats, such as launching the first Sputnik satellite and sending the first humans into space, but it was eventually disbanded in 1991.
