Mehmet Ali Ağca (born 9 January 1958) is a Turkish assassin. He assassinated the left-wing Turkish journalist Abdi Ipekci on February 1, 1979, and then escaped from prison in Turkey and on May 13, 1981, assassinated Pope John Paul II, unsuccessfully, but seriously wounded. Arrested Mehmet Ali Aja served 19 years in an Italian prison and was deported to Turkey, where he served another 10 years. Mehmet Ali Aja was released from prison on January 18, 2010. Although Aza is known to have been a member of the Turkish transnationalist group, Gray Wolves, he claimed to be a mercenary with no particular political affiliation.
