English (English: English language) is a West Germanic language that originated in England, a member of the United Kingdom. It has 26 letters and consists of 21 consonants and 5 vowels. Today, it is used not only as an official language mainly in the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and countries in North America, but also as a second language in other regions. In addition, English is the most widely learned and used language in the world due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries and the influence of the United States since the mid-20th century. It is also compared. English was formed as the language of the Anglo-Saxons, which was a dialect of the West Germanic family, changed through various historical events. Old English, which began with the Anglo-Saxon migration to the British Isles around the 5th century, was influenced by Old Norse, which was later spread with the invasion of the Vikings. After the Norman Conquest, Old English developed into Middle English under the influence of Norman in terms of words and spelling. The etymology of the word English is derived from the plural Ænglisc or Engle of Angles, an Old English 12th century. Modern English is based on the major vowel trends in England in the 15th century. During this time, the number of foreign words and new words originating from various countries increased significantly. In particular, the number of technical terms derived from Latin and ancient Greek has also increased. In addition, the native accents of the peoples of each country were absorbed into English. English is written in Roman characters just like French or Italian.

Modern English is often referred to as the first global lingua franca. English is used as an international language in fields such as communication, science, trade, aviation, entertainment, broadcasting, and diplomacy. Therefore, the use of English is often criticized as linguistic imperialism. English began to be spoken outside the British Isles with the expansion of the British Empire, and by the end of the 19th century it had become a literal global language. The United States and Canada, which were British colonies, also contributed to the expansion of the use of English. In particular, the globalization of English use became more widespread due to the United States, which became a superpower after World War II. It assumes the ability to use. For this, more than hundreds of millions of people learn English. English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. British linguist David Krystal says that other languages are being hit hard by the rapid growth in global use of English. He points out that as the use of English becomes common across the globe, including North America and Australia, the linguistic diversity of natural languages in each region is diminishing and even becoming a dead language that is no longer spoken. This influence of English can also be confirmed in the study of historical linguistics. English, which is widely used in many language communities, has brought about complex and dynamic language changes. Creole and pidgin are new language families created under the influence of English.

English is a member of the West Germanic language family with origins from Anglo-Frisian and Low-Germanic. These languages were introduced to Britain through various routes from northwestern Europe, such as Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, from the time of the Roman province until the 5th century. One of the Germanic peoples who settled in Britain like this is the Angles, and their name Angles is derived from the place where they originally resided, Angles.
