The Wikimedia Foundation (English: Wikimedia Foundation Inc.) is a non-profit organization that manages various wiki-related sites such as Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation was founded on June 20, 2003 by Jimmy Wales in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. Organized under the laws of the State of Florida, the headquarters moved to San Francisco, California in 2007.
Purpose of Foundation
The Wikimedia Foundation is designated as a public charitable organization under Section 501c(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code. The foundation's charter states that the purpose of the foundation is to collect, develop, and effectively disseminate educational content around the world. Its business is to provide it to the public.
Operation of the Foundation
In 2001, Internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales and software developer Larry Sanger founded Wikipedia, an Internet encyclopedia. Wikipedia was originally funded by Jimmy Wales' for-profit business, Bomis. As Wikipedia drained resources from Bomis, Wales and Sanger came up with a philanthropic model to finance the project. On June 20, 2003, the Wikimedia Foundation, based on Wikipedia and Nupier, was founded, and in 2005, the IRS approved the foundation as an educational foundation under the category of "Adult, Continuing education."
