Administrative divisions in Japan are made up of prefectures, which are regional self-governing bodies, and municipalities (including special wards), which are basic autonomous groups. A part of the city is designated as a city designated by an administrative ordinance, a special city, or a core city.

Prefectures

A prefecture (Japanese: 都道府県 Dodofuken[*], Prefectures of Japan) is a regional autonomous body that consists of a province, a province, a prefecture[*], and a prefecture(県ken[*]). meaning to bind.

Municipalities and special wards

A municipality (Japanese: shi町村, shicho-son[*]) is a grouping of the basic self-governing bodies: city (city), township (Japanese: 町-cho[*]), and village (Japanese: village-son[*]). Article 2, Paragraph 3 of the “Japan Local Autonomy Act” stipulates that it is a “basic local public organization”. In Tokyo, there are special wards that correspond to municipalities, and they are also called municipalities (shikucho village [*]).

When designated by the ordinance

Although it is expressed as a designated city in the 《Local Autonomy Act》, it is generally referred to as a 'designated city by a government ordinance' in the sense of being designated by an ordinance. For short, it is also referred to as the spirit city or the designated city. For details, refer to the ordinance-designated city.

See Core Poetry for details.
