Typhoon Rai (RAI) is the 22nd typhoon of 2021. Rai is the name submitted by Micronesia and means money made of stone.
Progress of the typhoon
Typhoon Rai was a tropical storm with a central pressure of 998 hPa, a maximum wind speed of 18 m/s, and a strong wind radius of 440 km (northwest radius) at 15:00 on December 13, and occurred in the sea around 730 km southeast of Palau (based on the typhoon information of the Japan Meteorological Agency). After the outbreak, it developed rapidly from west to northwest due to a weak wind shear, and at 15:00 on December 16, a 'severe' typhoon with a central pressure of 915 hPa and a maximum wind speed of 54 m/s on land (Surigao Island, Philippines) near 240 km east of Cebu, Philippines. reached its first peak. After the first peak, it was slightly weakened as it passed through the Visayas and Palawan Islands in the Philippines, and then advanced to the South China Sea as it advanced west to northwest, and then rapidly developed again due to a weak wind shear. At sea (South China Sea), it reached its second peak as a 'severe' typhoon with a central pressure of 915 hPa and a maximum wind speed of 54 m/s. After the second peak period, it moved northwest and then turned northeastward, and then it rapidly weakened due to the dry air from the north, low sea surface temperature, and strong wind shear. It was announced that it disappeared as a tropical depression with a central pressure of 1004 hPa in the South China Sea). According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, it was announced that it had disappeared as a tropical depression with a central pressure of 1004 hPa in the sea (South China Sea) about 310 km south-southwest of Hong Kong, China at 3 o'clock on December 21st. The typhoon killed more than 400 people, and it is expected to be expelled due to massive damage to the Philippines and Vietnam.
