Harry Mason Reid (December 2, 1939 – December 28, 2021) was an American politician. He is from Nevada, and he is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). He is a graduate of Utah State University and the George Washington University Law School. He returned to Nevada, where he served as Henderson City Law Officer, then as a Democratic Party Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1971 to 1975. He ran for the U.S. Senate in Nevada in 1974 but lost, and also lost the 1975 Las Vegas mayoral election. He served as Chairman of the Nevada Games Commission from 1977 to 1981, and was elected to the State House of Representatives in the 1982 Nevada First District Election, where he served as a Member of the House of Representatives from 1983. He again ran for the U.S. Senate in 1986 and has been a U.S. Senator since 1987. He was the Senate Democrat Minority Leader from 1999 to 2005, and the Senate Democrat Minority Leader since 2005. With the Democrats winning the Senate majority in the 2006 midterm elections, he became the Senate majority leader from the 2007 session, and has been influential since the 2008 presidential election with Barack Obama as leader of the ruling party.
