January 1 - In Amsterdam, Mr. Tetje de Jong becomes the first female police commissioner in the Netherlands. 3 - The American weekly Time magazine names the Rev. Martin Luther King as 1963 man of the year. 4 - The notorious broadcast "Image Religion" in the VARA series "It just so happens once again". In the weeks that follow, Mies Bouwman, one of the employees, is threatened. Other participants from that time included Yoka Berretty, Jan Blokker, Dimitri Frenkel Frank and Joop van Tijn. 12 - The democratically elected government and sultan of the Sultanate of Zanzibar are overthrown in a coup d'état and the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba is proclaimed. 16 - The Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! premiere. 22 - Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) gains self-government with Kenneth Kaunda as prime minister.February17 - In a coup in Gabon, President Gabriel Léon M'ba is overthrown by a group of young soldiers. 19 - French paratroopers end military rule in Gabon and restore pro-French president M'ba.March6 - Cassius Clay announces that he will henceforth be known as Muhammad Ali. 7 - First class sailor Theo van Eijck flies unauthorized in a Grumman S-2 Tracker from Malta to Libya where he applied for political asylum. 9 - The first Ford Mustang rolls off the production line. 19 - American Geraldine "Jerry" Mock becomes the first woman to fly around the world in a solo flight from March 19 to April 17. 21 - The Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen was won by the song 'Non ho l'età', performed by Gigliola Cinquetti. 27 - Alaska is hit by a 9.2 on the Richter scale earthquake lasting four full minutes. Anchorage is badly hit, but because the area is so sparsely populated, the number of victims is not that bad. April1 - Military coup in Brazil. President João Goulart is impeached. 11 - Last broadcast by the VARA of the orchestra The Ramblers conducted by Theo Uden Masman. 19 - In Laos, right-wing groups undertake a coup. 24 - The famous statue of the little mermaid in Copenhagen is beheaded. 26 - In East Africa, the Republic of Tanganyika and People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba together form the new Republic of the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. 29 - Princess Irene marries the Spanish Prince Carlos Hugo of Bourbon-Parma in Rome. Prior to the marriage, Irene had joined the Roman Catholic Church in January 1964.
