Science and technology 1880 - Clarke and Foster patent the first electric hearing aid. 1899 - William Middlebrook invents the paperclip (first patent application for paperclip machine). 1961 - NASA launches Explorer 11, a satellite that contains a telescope for observing gamma rays. 2005 - The largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380, makes its maiden flight.
