General 1903 - A French fishing vessel from Boulogne runs aground near Hoek van Holland, killing 13. 1919 - The Dutch airline KLM is founded, making it the oldest existing airline in the world. 1985 - The cruise ship Achille Lauro is hijacked by Palestinian terrorists. 1992 - Abimael Guzmán, the leader of the Peruvian Maoist guerrilla movement Shining Path, is sentenced by a military court to life imprisonment for high treason after a closed trial. 2010 - Floods and mudslides in the Indonesian province of West Papua kill at least 97 people and leave thousands homeless. 2011 - The Nobel Committee announces that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman for their efforts to improve women's rights. 2015 - The United States releases more than 5,000 inmates early in late October to combat prison overcrowding. 2016 - The leader of the Turkish Hells Angels from the German city of Gießen is shot dead. 2016 - The Hague Unit of the National Police Corps concludes after an internal investigation into the death of Mitch Henriquez that four of the five police officers involved can be accused of serious dereliction of duty and the fifth officer involved committed dereliction of duty. 2017 - Tens of thousands of Spaniards take to the streets to defuse the crisis over a unilateral split from Catalonia. The demonstrators, dressed in white in Barcelona and carrying white balloons, chanted slogans such as 'less hate', 'more dialogue' and 'less testosterone' in front of the city hall. Demonstrations are also taking place in Madrid. The demonstrators are calling for peaceful talks in both cities. 2021 - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake kills at least 20 and injures hundreds in Pakistan's Baluchistan province. The epicenter is about 100 km east of Quetta. War 1571 – Battle of Lepanto, in which the Turkish fleet was defeated by the Christian alliance. 1940 - Germany invades Romania. 1943 - Japan executes 100 American prisoners on Wake. 1944 - the first rocket attack on Belgium: at 10 pm a V-2 bomb hit Brasschaat, a municipality northeast of Antwerp. 1944 - The first and only armed uprising in the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Sonderkommando. These events have been made into the movie The Gray Zone. 1950 - The United Nations, led by the United States, invades Korea. 2010 - A double bomb attack on a Sufi shrine in the South Pakistani port city of Karachi kills at least nine people. 2001 - US invasion of Afghanistan, beginning of the Afghan War. 2015 - The Syrian government army, along with Lebanese militant Hezbollah and Iranian ground forces, launch a major offensive in Hama and Idlib provinces. They are supported in this by Russian air and missile attacks. Politics 1840 - King William I abdicates. 1949 - The German Democratic Republic (GDR) is formed. 1960 - U.S. presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon have a fourth Cold War election debate. 2000 - Vojislav Koštunica is sworn in as president in Yugoslavia. 2010 - The Dutch Queen Queen Beatrix appoints VVD leader Mark Rutte as formateur of the minority cabinet Rutte of VVD and CDA, which receives support from the PVV. 2012 - In the presidential election, Hugo Chávez is re-elected as president of Venezuela and starts a fourth term. 2014 - The four negotiating parties for the Belgian federal government (N-VA, CD&V, Open VLD and MR) reach a government agreement.
