Ahmet Yılmaz Çalık (26 February 1994 – 11 January 2022) was a Turkish footballer who usually played as a central defender. Between 2011 and 2022 he played for Gençlerbirliği, Galatasaray and Konyaspor. Çalık made his debut in the Turkey national football team in 2015, eventually making eight international appearances. Çalık died in a traffic accident on January 11, 2022. He was 27 years old.

Club career

Çalık came from Gençlerbirliği's youth academy. He made his debut in the Turkish Süper Lig during the 2012/13 season. His first appearance was on April 21, 2013, when Gençlerbirliği beat Fenerbahçe 2–0 with goals from Aykut Demir and Björn Vleminckx. Çalık was allowed to start in the starting line-up by coach Fuat Çapa and he played the full ninety minutes. In the remaining four games after that, he also played for the entire game. Çalık kept his starting spot after the summer of 2013 and remained a key figure in Gençlerbirliği's defense for three and a half years. The defender signed for his first goal on October 19, 2013. On that day, he gave his team the lead against Kasımpaşa in the seventh minute. After fifteen minutes of play, Tabaré Viudez tied the score and before half-time, Ezequiel Scarione and Ryan Babel gave Kasımpaşa a 1–3 lead. This was also the final score. In January 2017, Çalık moved to Galatasaray, where he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract. The transfer was worth approximately two and a half million euros. After three and a half years, the full-back was taken over by Konyaspor on a free transfer. At the end of November 2021, his contract was extended for a further 3 years, after he proved himself of solid value with the team.

Dead

On January 11, 2022, it was announced that Çalık had died en route to Ankara. He had to collect papers there to be able to marry his betrothed. Condolences followed from all over the football world. The league match against Istanbul Başakşehir, which was to be played on January 15, was canceled only to be made up on February 22. In the Turkish league, after his death, the matches were stopped on the 6th minute to commemorate the footballer, because he wore the shirt number 6 for Konyaspor. In addition, the Turkish Football Association decided to name the 2021/2022 season after the player. Konyaspor announced Çalık's full salary would be paid until the end of his current contract and his shirt number 6 would never be used at the club again.

International career

Çalık played for several Turkish national youth teams. With Turkey -19, he participated in the European Championship -19 in Lithuania. With Turkey -20, he was active in the World Cup -20, which was played in Turkey itself. In 2013, he made his debut in Turkey –21. On November 17, 2015, he made his debut in the Turkey national football team in a friendly against Greece (0–0 draw). National coach Fatih Terim allowed the defender to start in the base and he played the entire game. The other debutant this game was Okay Yokuşlu (Trabzonspor). With Turkey, Çalık took part in the European Championship in France in June 2016. After defeats to Spain (0–3) and Croatia (0–1) and a win over the Czech Republic (2–0) Turkey was eliminated in the group stage. Çalık did not play in all three games. Çalık scored his first goal in the national team in his eighth appearance, a friendly against Moldova. After a goal from Emre Mor, he doubled the Turkish lead halfway through the first half. Cengiz Ünder extended this even further in the second half, before a goal by Radu Gînsari eventually made it 3–1.
