The Ten Years' War breaks out in Cuba, against the Spanish government. The English football club Stoke is founded. January 2 - First issue of the newspaper Bergens Tidende. February 12 - The night between 11 and 12 February, 32 people were killed in the Kletthamranskredet in Oppdal, the worst avalanche in Norwegian history. June 23 - Christopher Latham Sholes patents his typewriter. October 10 - Cuba declares independence from Spain December 31 - Strongest recorded high pressure: 1084 hPa in northern Central Siberia Liechtenstein abolishes the military. The country now only has conscripts for defense, with Switzerland as protectors in extreme situations.
