January 1 - The Republic of China is recognized. January 6 - New Mexico becomes the 47th state of the United States. January 9 - US Marines invade Honduras. January 18 - Robert Scott reaches the South Pole. February 12 - China adopts the Gregorian calendar. February 14 - Arizona becomes the 48th state in the United States. In Groton, Connecticut, the first diesel-powered submarine is taken into use. March 5 - Italy becomes the first to use airships in the military; they are used for reconnaissance west of Tripoli behind the Turkish border. March 30 - France establishes a protectorate over Morocco. April 10 - RMS "Titanic" leaves the quay in Southampton, England on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. April 14 - 15 - RMS "Titanic" hits an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean and sinks after a few hours. May 13 - Royal Flying Corps (now the Royal Air Force) is established in the United Kingdom. Norway

The Norwegian Teachers' Association is formed. February 20 - Jens Bratlie takes office as Prime Minister. February 25 - Norway's first car race is held on the ice on the Bunnefjord. March 7 - Roald Amundsen announces that his expedition has reached the South Pole, even though they had actually reached Poland on December 14, 1911. June 1 - Lieutenant Hans Fleischer Dons makes the first flight of a Norwegian in Norway, from Borre to Øra near Fredrikstad. September 24 - The Norwegian Nurses' Association is founded. November 14 - The Liberal Party gets a majority in the Storting election alone with 64 seats. Tromsø Labor Party is founded. November 15 - Norway's first national antiquarian Herman Major Schirmer is appointed by the King in Council.
