The mission is to bring TV cameras and crash lands on the Moon. February 2 - US spacecraft Ranger VI lands on the moon. February 11 - War breaks out in Limassol, Cyprus, between the Greeks and the Turks. Taiwan breaks diplomatic relations with France. March 6 - Paul I of Greece dies and is succeeded by Constantine II. March 9 - In Cyprus, Greek Cypriot forces attack Turkish strongholds. March 14 - A Dallas jury finds Jack Ruby guilty of killing John F. Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. April 26 - Tanganyika and Zanzibar merge into Tanzania. May 29 - The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) is established. June 12 - In South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who has already been imprisoned since 1961, is sentenced to life in prison for treason and espionage. June 30 - UN military forces leave Congo.

July 26 - State of emergency in Rochester, New York after racial riots. August 2 - US warships are attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. August 13 - Last execution in Britain. September 3 - Indonesian forces land in Malaysia. September 4 - British forces come to Malaysia's aid. September 13 - Coup in South Vietnam. September 21 - Malta becomes independent. September 27 - The Warren Commission concludes that Lee Harvey Oswald alone killed President John F. Kennedy.

February 3 - Cargo vessel "Norhals" with stockfish cargo sinks in a storm between Buholmråsa lighthouse and Nord-Rødøy in Trøndelag. The crew of three perishes. February 26 - The herring boat "Norna" sinks. One perishes. March 2 - The five kroner banknotes are replaced with coins. March 12 - A shark disappears off Arnøya in Troms. Three perish.
