First quarter

January 3 - Snurperen «Saltnesvåg» hits ground. One perishes. January 9 - Soviet forces storm Vilnius in an attempt to prevent Lithuania's secession from the union. January 12 - Gulf War: US Congress gives green light to use military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait. January 13 - Bloody Sunday in Lithuania: Soviet military forces attack civilians demonstrating for Lithuanian independence in Vilnius. 14 are killed and a large number injured. January 15 - Gulf War: Deadline set by the UN for Iraqi forces to withdraw from Kuwait expires. January 16 - Gulf War: Operation Desert Storm begins. January 17 - King Olav V dies. February 9 - Lithuania holds a referendum on independence. February 16 - Gulf War: US and British planes bomb a suburb of Baghdad. Three people die and at least eleven people are injured. February 23 - Gulf War: Ground forces cross the border between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, beginning with the Ground War. February 25 - Gulf War: An Iraqi Scud rocket hits a U.S. military barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. 28 American soldiers die. February 27 - Gulf War: US President George H.W. Bush declares that "Kuwait is liberated." March 9 - Massive protests against Slobodan Milosevic in Belgrade. Two people are killed and several tanks are in the streets. March 10 - Gulf War: 540,000 US troops leave the Gulf of Persia. March 31 - The Warsaw Pact is dissolved.

Second quarter

April 9 - Georgia declares independence from the Soviet Union. May 4 - Sjarken «Trond Kåre» sinks in Sogn og Fjordane. Two perish. May 5 - The clan, Vålerenga's unofficial supporter association was founded. May 15 - Edith Cresson becomes France's first female prime minister. May 21 - Rajiv Gandhi, India's former leader, is killed in a bomb blast in the town of Sriperumbudur during an election campaign. June 20 - The German parliament decides to move the capital back from Bonn to Berlin. June 21 - Sulitjelma Bergverk A / S is closed down. June 26 - Slovenia war breaks out between Slovenia and Yugoslavia. The fighting lasts for ten days and ends with Slovenian victory and independence.

Third quarter

July

July 1st - The military alliance The Warsaw Pact is formally dissolved (concluded 1955). Sweden is applying for membership in the EC. July 10 - Boris Yeltsin becomes Russia's first president. July 22 - Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is arrested after 11 bodies are found in his apartment.

August

August 23 - Moscow coup collapses. The Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia gain real independence from the Soviet Union. August 25 - Battle of Vukovar begins as Yugoslav and Serbian forces attack the Croatian city of Vukovar. August 30 - Azerbaijan becomes independent from the Soviet Union. August 31 - Mass fights between racists and anti-racists in Brumunddal after the leader of the People's Movement against Immigration, Arne Myrdal, gives a speech in the town square.

September

September 17 - The first development version of the Linux kernel, version 0.01, is released. September 19 - Iceman Ötzi is found. September 20 - More than 3,000 turned their backs on Arne Myrdal when he again gave a speech in Brumunddal. September 21 - Armenia becomes independent (from the Soviet Union).

Fourth quarter

21 October - Agreement between the EC and EFTA on the establishment of the "European Economic Area" (EEA). November 8 - The cheat boat "Kim Roger" is sunk off Andøya by a cargo boat. Two perish.
