Cape Canaveral is a strip of land in Brevard County along Florida's Atlantic coast. Cape Canaveral is located on Merritt Island, an area known as the Space Coast because it houses the John F. Kennedy Space Center, where most of the United States' spacecraft are launched, and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, which is also used to launch rockets. The name Cape Canaveral has been used for 400 years, but for a ten-year period, 1963–1973, the area was renamed Cape Kennedy in honor of the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, who was a great enthusiast of the space program. However, this was not a popular name change among Florida residents, especially not among those who lived in the city of Cape Canaveral. In 1973, the name was changed back to Cape Canaveral, as it is called today.
