David-Maria Sassoli (born 30 May 1956, died 11 January 2022) was an Italian journalist and Social Democratic politician (Partito Democratico). He was elected a Member of the European Parliament for the first time in 2009, and was Vice President from 2014 to 2019. Sassoli was elected President of the European Parliament on 3 July 2019. Sassoli worked as a journalist, including for the newspaper Il Giorno and the television channel RAI. In the period 1996 to 1997, he directed the television program La cronaca in diretta in RAI 2, for which he was named the country's best reporter. In 2012, he ran for mayor of Rome, but lost to Ignazio Marino. Sassoli was a liberal Catholic, married, and had two children.
