Common Authority File
Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) is an authority postal register that is operated and maintained by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB) with all the German library associations, Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund (obv) and Schweizerische Nationalbibliothek in collaboration.
From 19 April 2012, GND replaces the former Personennamendatei (PND), Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD), Gemeinsame Körperschaftsdatei (GKD) and Deutsches Musikarchiv (DMA-EST-Datei) and includes persons, companies, events, geographical data and concepts.
Through the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) project, GND is linked to other national authority records via concordance files.
Basis
The aim of GND is to connect the many different resources and sources of information that libraries and other cultural institutions in the German-speaking area offer. Datasets that have been transferred unchanged from the previous authority registers to GND have the same key values as before, now in the identifier GND Number. Duplicates are coordinated and datasets are successively prepared for the semantic web.
GND uses the RDA regulations and is based on the exchange format MARC 21 authority.
Content and scope
At the time the Gemeinsame Normdatei was introduced, the register contained 9,493,860 data sets of the following entity types:
4,456,000 personal names («not individualized», ie without type designation)
2,650,000 persons ("individualized", type p)
1,145,000 companies, legal entities and the like (type k) - Körperschaften
571,000 events and congresses (type v) - Veranstaltungen
286,000 geographical data (type g)
200,000 technical terms (type s) - Subject terms
187,000 works (type w) - for example for the work Gemeinsame Normdaten in «Autoritetspost» at the bottom of this article.
