The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is the oldest and largest movie database on the Internet. It is known for being very comprehensive, also with information about non-English language films, low-budget and TV films, as well as video games. The database has 57 million unique visitors per month (2009) IMDb saw the light of day in 1990 as a simple program to search the list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for the newsgroup rec.arts.movies. In 1993, it was possible to send questions to the program via e-mail, and the following year, users could also submit additions to the database. Shortly afterwards, a www-based interface was developed, which opened up IMDb to the large user base. Initially, IMDb was non-commercial, using donated bandwidth and hardware. In 1996, a company was formed in the United Kingdom, Internet Movie Database Ltd. with the ownership of the database, and in connection with this, advertising was also introduced on the website. In 1998, the company was acquired by Amazon.com, which is still (2015) the owner.
