Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal
Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal (born 14 June 1990) is a Norwegian athlete who since 2016 represents IK Tjalve. She competes primarily in long-distance races, obstacles and downhill races, but has also made a name for herself in cross-country skiing. Previously, she focused as much on cross-country skiing as on athletics, but from 2010 she chose to prioritize running. 5,000 meters with 14.31,07.She has two European Championship bronzes; in the 3,000 meter hurdles from 2018 and in the 10,000 meters in 2016. In 2021, she won European Championship gold in cross-country running.
She is educated at Norges Toppidrettsgymnas in Lillehammer. Grøvdal grew up in Isfjorden in Rauma and was a young member of Isfjorden Idrettslag. She is a cousin of the former cross-country skier Håvard Bjerkeli.
Grøvdal won the junior class during the National Championships in cross-country running in 2005, short course. In the terrain relay, she participated in Møre og Romsdal's senior team, together with Brynhild Synstnes and Trine Pilskog, who won bronze. She participated in the Nordic Junior Athletics Championships 2005 in Espoo, Finland, where she won bronze in the 2000 meter hurdles. Her time of 6: 58.68 was the Norwegian junior record (U19). During the Junior-NM in athletics 2005 she participated in the class KJ-19, and got gold in 2000 meters hurdles and bronze in 3000 meters.
During the National Championships in cross-country running in 2006 in April, she won gold in the cross-country relay in the senior class. Norway participated in the 2nd division during the European Cup in Athletics 2006, the forerunner to the European Team Championships in Athletics. There she won the 3000 meter hurdles, and contributed to Norway winning the 2nd division with 124 points and advancing to the 1st division in 2007. She won the 1500 meters during the DLV Junior Gala in Mannheim, and won the 1500 meters, 3000 meters and 2000 meters obstacle during the Junior-NM in athletics 2006. During the NM in athletics 2006 she won 3000 meters obstacle, and she came in fifth place in 1500 meters. She came in fifth place in the 3000 meter hurdles during the Junior World Championships in Athletics 2006, and during the Nordic Junior Championships in Athletics 2006 she won the 3000 meters and 2000 meters hurdles. She participated in the J16 class during the Youth Championships in Athletics 2006 in August, and won 3000 meters, almost a minute ahead of Runa Skrove Falck. She set a new personal record with 9: 16.94. During the National Championships in cross-country skiing in September, she won the junior class. In December, she also participated in the European Championships in cross-country running in 2006, where she won silver in the junior class, behind Stephanie Twell.
Grøvdal won two of the races in the Norwegian Cup in cross-country skiing for junior 2006/07, and finished in fourth place with a total of 395 points. She represented Norway during the European Athletics Cup 2007 (First League), and came in second place in 5000 meters, behind British Jo Pavey. She won bronze in the 2000 meter hurdles during the Youth World Championships in Athletics 2007, and won the 3000 meter hurdles during the Junior European Championships in Athletics 2007, ahead of Kristine Eikrem Engeset. Grøvdal ran there in 9: 44.34, which was a European junior record and championship record for the Junior-EM. She won 3000 meters during the Junior-NM in athletics 2007, and won silver in 1500 meters, behind Kristine Eikrem Engeset. She also participated in the 3000 meter hurdles during the 2007 World Championships in Athletics, but was knocked out in the test heat.
In 2008, it became known that Grøvdal had suffered from eating disorders in 2007 and 2008, and she competed less in 2008. She was followed up by the Olympic Summit during this period. She won 5000 meters during the NM in athletics 2008, and she won 3000 meters and 2000 meters hurdles during the Junior-NM in athletics 2008. She won Furumomila in October, with a new track record.
Grøvdal won the women's class during the National Championships in cross-country 2009 short track, and she also won gold in the relay. She won Sentrumsløpet in Oslo, and came in second place in 1500 meters during Florø Athletics Festival. She represented Norway during the European Team Championships
