The National Hockey League 2021/22 was the 105th season (104th season played) in the National Hockey League (NHL) and consisted of 32 teams. New team for the season was Seattle Kraken. A full basic series with 82 games per team was held from October to April for the first time since the 2018/19 season as the previous two seasons were shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic The Stanley Cup playoffs were won by the Colorado Avalanche, who defeated reigning champions Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 in the finals. The decisive match was played on June 26, 2022 in Tampa where the away team secured the decisive victory of 2-1 on a goal scored in the second period by Artturi Lehkonen. Tampa Bay thus won the title for the third time in history and for the first time since 2001.

Basic series

8 teams from each conference qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The three best teams in each division secure six of the places. In addition, the other two teams with the best score, which did not finish top 3 in a division, will qualify for the playoffs on the Wild Card. All teams play a total of 82 matches in the regular season. The teams play against the teams that are not in the same conference two matches (one at home and one away) - a total of 32 matches. Outdoor matches

Three of the regular season matches were played outdoors: The NHL Winter Classic was played on January 1, 2022 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Minnesota Wild lost 4-6 to the St. Louis Blues. The NHL Stadium Series was played on February 26, 2022 at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. The Nashville Predators lost 2-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The NHL Heritage Classic was played on March 13, 2022 at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario. The Buffalo Sabers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5–2.

Postponed matches


The NHL All-Star Game was held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 5, 2022. The Metropolitan Division defeated the Central Division 5-3 in the final.
