The Allies, also called the United Nations from January 1, 1942 - countries that jointly opposed the Axis bloc during World War II. At the beginning of the war, the Allies consisted only of Poland, France, Great Britain and British dominions (Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland, Canada and the Union of South Africa), but with the escalation of the conflict, countries with territories on almost all continents joined the alliance. The alliance was formalized in the United Nations Declaration of January 1, 1942. However, the name "United Nations" was seldom used in the war. Leaders of the so-called The "big three" - Great Britain, the USA and the USSR - coordinated and controlled the activities of the alliance. Relations between Great Britain and the United States were particularly close.
