History

Modern

In 1559, the city used a seal with the face of Jesus. In turn, Bartosz Paprocki in 1578 states that the coat of arms of the Vitebsk voivodeship is Pogoń and the city of Vitebsk also uses such a coat of arms. The coat of arms with the profile of Jesus the Savior was given to Witebsk by Zygmunt III on March 17, 1597.

Zabory

Vitebsk became part of the Russian partition after the First Partition of Poland in 1772. In 1781 the city received a new coat of arms (a two-headed shield, a two-headed eagle in the upper field, the coat of arms of Russia, and a red-and-silver Pogoń stripes in the lower field).

Present

The status of the Vitebsk coat of arms was regulated in 2004 by a decree of the President of Belarus. The next change took place in 2009 - the graphic design was updated.
