The WWE Divas Championship was the 2008–2016 women's championship title by the US wrestling federation World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). The word "Divas" in the title of the championship referred to the term WWE used to describe its female roster for many years. As with most wrestling championships, the WWE Divas Championship winner was selected based on a predetermined scenario. The creation of the WWE Divas Championship was announced on June 6, 2008 by Vickie Guerrero, SmackDown general manager, in response to the WWE Women's Championship, operating under the competitive brand - Raw. The first champion was Michelle McCool, who defeated Natalia at The Great American Bash (July 20, 2008). As a result of the 2009 draft, Maryse was transferred along with the title from SmackDown to Raw. At Night of Champions (September 19, 2010), Michelle McCool (WWE Women's Champion) defeated Melina (WWE Divas Champion), unifying both titles in favor of the WWE Divas Championship and removing the Women's Championship from the list of active WWE Championship titles. WWE Divas Championship was removed from the list of existing WWE titles at WrestleMania 32 (April 3, 2016) after WWE Hall of Fame member Lita introduced a new title - WWE Women's Championship replacing the Divas Championship. That day, reigning champion Charlotte defeated Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks in a Triple Threat match, becoming the first Women's Champion and the last Divas Champion. The championship title was held by 17 players. Eve Torres and AJ Lee reached for it three times. The largest cumulative number of days of all reigns belonged to AJ Lee (406 days), the longest single possession was held by Nikki Bella (301 days), and the shortest was Jillian Hall (5 minutes).
