18th World Athletics Championships - Athletics competition held in Oregon, in the cities of Eugene and Portland, on the west coast of the United States between July 15 and 24, 2022. Originally, the championship was to be played from August 8 to 15, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, the International Olympic Committee decided to postpone the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo to the summer of 2021. This decision sparked speculation about a possible rescheduling of the World Athletics Championships. Finally, on April 8, 2020, World Athletics confirmed that the competition will be held between July 15 and 24, 2022.

Choosing an organizer

The organizer of the championship was chosen by the Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on April 16, 2015 during a meeting in Beijing. Eugene was a candidate to host the 2019 World Athletics Championships, but in the fall of 2014, he lost the fight against the Qatar capital city, Doha. The decision of the IAAF Council in April 2015 aroused a lot of controversy because the official process of selecting the host was not carried out (the application deadline was set for 2016). Among the cities that wanted to apply for the organization of the competition, but due to the decision of the IAAF authorities, did not take up this role, there was, inter alia, Gothenburg.
