Teresa Berganza Vargas (born March 16, 1933 in Madrid, died May 13, 2022 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial) - Spanish opera singer (mezzo-soprano). Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of St. Ferdinand.
Teresa Berganza was born in Madrid. She studied piano and solo singing at the local conservatory. There she also won the first prize in singing in 1954. Her concert debut took place in 1955.
The opera debut took place at the Aix-en-Provence festival in 1957, in the part of Dorabelia in Mozart's Così fan tutte. The same year she made her debut at La Scala in Milan, and the following year she performed at the Glyndebourne festival. In 1959, she appeared for the first time at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London as Rosina in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville". Later she was very successful in this role. In 1967 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Cherubino in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro.
Her recital debut took place at Carnegie Hall in 1964. Berganza's concert repertoire includes Spanish, French, German and Russian songs as well as Mozart's concert arias. In the years 1957–1977 she was the wife of the composer and pianist Félix Lavill, with whom she recorded and performed many times. They had three children, including the soprano Cecilia Lavilla Berganza.
In 1991, Berganza was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award, along with six other Spanish singers.
In 1992 she took part in the opening ceremony of Expo '92 in Seville and the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Summer Olympics. In 1994, she was elected the first woman at the Spanish Academy of Arts. She has taught singing at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía school, continuing to perform the music of Spanish composers, and has conducted master classes around the world. Among her students were María Bayo and Jorge Chaminé.
Decorated with the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise (2013).
Berganza died on May 13, 2022 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial at the age of 89.
