WorldCat - a central catalog combining the collections of 71 thousand. libraries from 112 countries participating in the Online Computer Library Center. The catalog is created and maintained by the libraries whose collections are included in it. It is the largest bibliographic database in the world. It contains over 150 million different records relating to over 1.4 billion physical and digital assets in over 470 languages. OCLC makes WorldCat available to all libraries for free, but the catalog is also the basis for other services - paid - such as resource sharing and collection management.

Evolution of services

In 2003, OCLC began an Open WorldCat pilot program by making abbreviated records from a subset of WorldCat available to partner websites and bookstores to increase the availability of member library collections. Since 2006, WorldCat can be searched directly from its website. In 2007, WorldCat Identities began sharing data on 20 million authors and subjects of published material.
