Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd was a British construction company that operated from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century. It was founded in 1847 by William George Armstrong, in Newcastle upon Tyne, specializing in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles and aircraft. Initially it produced hydraulic machines, cranes and bridges, later also armaments. In 1882, it merged with the firm of Charles Mitchell to form Armstrong Mitchell, building ships on the River Tyne. A further merger took place in 1897 with the engineering firm of Joseph Whitworth, forming Armstrong Whitworth. In 1927, Vickers joined forces to create Vickers-Armstrongs.
