Facebook is a social media and virtual social network launched on February 4, 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook Inc.. On October 4, 2012, Facebook reached the milestone of 1 billion active users, hence the largest virtual social network in the world. On June 27, 2016, Facebook reached the mark of 2 billion active users. The service name stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the beginning of the school year by some university administrations in the United States to help students get to know each other. Facebook allows any user who claims to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the site. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The creation of the website was initially limited by the founders to students at Harvard University, but has been expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League and Stanford University. The site gradually added support for students at several other universities before opening to high school students and later to anyone thirteen and older. However, based on May 2011 data from ConsumersReports.org, there were 7.5 million children under the age of 13 with Facebook accounts in violation of the website's own terms of service.A January 2009 Study by Compete .com ranked Facebook as the most used virtual social network worldwide by monthly active users. Entertainment Weekly added the site to their "Best of" list, saying: "Like we lived before we chased our ex-boyfriends, remembered our co-workers' birthdays, pissed off our friends, and played an exciting game of Scrabulous before from Facebook?" Quantcast claims that Facebook had 138.9 million monthly unique visitors in the United States in May 2011. According to Social Media Today, it was estimated that in April 2010 about 41.6% of the US population had a Facebook account. However, Facebook's market growth has started to stabilize in some regions, with the site losing 7 million active users in the US and Canada in May 2011. Facebook has filed an initial public offering on 1 December February 2012, and began selling the shares after three months, reaching a capitalization of US$ 104 billion dollars. On July 21, 2016, Facebook made its first flight with a drone that is expected to take internet worldwide. The way chosen by Zuckerberg and his team to try to bring the web to an audience that is now offline, was to bet on flying equipment powered by solar energy, and after months of testing with smaller models, the company finally made its first flight from your Aquila drone.
