1578 – Battle of Alcácer-Quibir: The King of Morocco defeats the Portuguese army, and King Sebastião of Portugal (pictured) is killed. The crown is inherited by his great-uncle, Cardinal D. Henrique, paving the way for a dynastic crisis. 1783 – Mount Asama erupts in Japan, killing an estimated 1,400 people.
