History

1871-1917

In 1872-1874. on the first company of the Izmailovsky regiment, the building of the Tsesarevich Nikolai Craft School was built, which is now the main building of the university. The school was founded in 1875 to train master locksmiths for industry. The school was created on the basis of the House of Charity and Craft Education and was its successor, the school was intended for the vocational education of children mainly from poor families. The name of Tsarevich Nicholas was given to the school in memory of the deceased eldest son of Emperor Alexander II. The first director from 1875 to 1880 was N. F. Labzin. Since March 1897, the director was Valentin Mikhailovich Arbuzov. The school served as the basis for the creation of the St. Petersburg State Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics and Voenmekh.
